Amyris BrasilWhile the Amyris industrial synthetic biology platform can use a wide variety of feed stocks, our initial focus is on Brasilian sugarcane due to its abundance, low cost, price stability and sustainable production. Amyris Brasil S.A. is our majority-owned subsidiary which was established to support technology scale-up leading toward commercialization of Amyris renewable products. The company, which has approximately 70 employees, is strategically located in Campinas, São Paulo, at the gateway to the sugarcane processing region. Scale-up activities in Brasil include: Pilot Plant: Amyris Brasil is operating a pilot plant in Campinas which enables Amyris to test our production processes under Brasilian production conditions using sugarcane feedstock. Demonstration Facility: The final step before full commercial production of Amyris products is comprehensive demonstration-scale testing in equipment more than 10-fold larger than that of pilot plant production. This step refines processes under conditions approximating full scale manufacturing. The facility also generates product samples for the evaluation and certification of product applications, and serves as a training site for manufacturing staff. Commercialization: Amyris Brasil is expanding our production capacity by working with Brasilian sugar and ethanol producers to produce Amyris fuels and chemicals through a “capital light” production model. Under this model, these producers will invest a substantial portion or all of the capital needed to build the Amyris facility for production of our renewable products while Amyris will provide technology, plant designs and technical expertise. Amyris Brasil will then market and distribute the products to end customers. Our first such arrangement is our joint venture with Usina São Martinho. The joint venture, SMA Indústria Química S.A., was created to build the first facility in Brasil fully dedicated to the production of Amyris renewable products.
